Holmes's publicist confirmed the engagement to the New York Post, which reported that the actress spent the holidays in her hometown of Toledo, showing off a ''respectably sized'' engagement ring to a childhood friend. A rep for Klein confirmed the impending nuptials to EW.com. Holmes, 25, and Klein, 24, have been dating since late 1999. No word on when or how the question was finally popped; as recently as October, Klein was telling Us magazine that there was no impending engagement. Former "Dawson's Creek" star Katie Holmes and "American Pie" actor Chris Klein are engaged, a spokesperson for the actress confirmed to PEOPLE.com on Tuesday. Though no wedding date has been announced, word of the impending nuptials follows a report in the New York Post's Page Six gossip column that Holmes was seen sporting a large diamond engagement ring while shopping at Banana Republic in her hometown of Toledo, Ohio, over Christmas. Holmes, 25, and Klein, 24, have been dating for five years. In October, when PEOPLE asked Holmes of their relationship, she responded: "Things are very good. Thank God." Pressed for further information, such as whether the two lived together (both reside in Los Angeles), Holmes said, "That's our business. But thank you for wondering." Holmes, who first came to audiences' attention in the 1997 film "The Ice Storm," starred on "Dawson's" for six seasons (1998-2003).
