The Dawson's Creek star plays Nurse Mills in the Robert Downey Jr movie. Her American Pie star boyfriend paid £100 to stop others from getting their hands on the dress. Katie Holmes didn’t have that luxury with “Pieces of April,” starring as a willful punker who’s on the outs with her mother. The actress, best known for playing Joey on “Dawson’s Creek,” enjoyed an idyllic childhood growing up as part of an affluent family in Toledo, Ohio. In some ways, Holmes’ lack of experience made “Pieces of April” more worthwhile. “I come from a very stable, loving environment,” Holmes says. “My parents have been married 37 years and I’m the youngest of five and I guess because my childhood and my family is so loving and very functional it’s kind of fun for me to be challenged with these roles and these stories that are very dysfunctional and to enter into those worlds.” “Pieces of April,” which opens today in Reno, is another attempt to broaden Holmes’ image as a teenage TV star and ingenue from films such as “Wonder Boys.” She’s already appeared as a saucy Southern debutante in “The Gift” and a homicidal college student in “Abandon,” opposite Benjamin Bratt. “I know, killah,” Holmes, 24, says with a laugh about her role in “Abandon.” Click here to read the rest of the article
