Katie interview, TV schedule update, more!
Posted November 04, 2003

I don't think I posted this interview before, even though many of the questions/answers appear very familiar lol:

Pieces of Katie Holmes
By Bonnie Sieglar

Best known for her role as Joey on TV’s “Dawson’s Creek”, Katie Holmes has traded in her small screen innocence for April Burns, a rebellious young woman who has never been on good terms with her mother, Joy (Patricia Clarkson). Living in a walk-up flat on the Lower East Side of Manhattan with her boyfriend, Bobby (Derek Luke), April in a burst of goodwill, volunteers to host her family for Thanksgiving. As if preparing a feast isn’t daunting enough for the cooking-challenged April, she discovers her oven doesn’t work and has to search her building for one that does. In doing so, April meets an eclectic array of neighbors, one being Wayne played with comical vulnerability by "Will & Grace’s" Sean Hayes.

Marking the directorial debut of Peter Hedges, writer of What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and About a Boy, Hedges wrote Pieces when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. “I wanted to make a movie about how we’re running out of time and how we say – without words – thank you and I’m sorry and goodbye.” With Holmes’ character whose mother is suffering through cancer treatments, April discovers the importance of family, the importance of being vulnerable and that it’s okay to love people.

What drew you to Pieces of April and when you go see movies, what do you personally look for in movie?

I always love a good story. I like movies that make me feel, movies that make me think and I like movies that have hope and I feel that this movie has a lot of hope at the end. I think there’s a lot going on in almost every scene so it keeps me captured. That’s what I look for in a movie. I’m not one of these people who don’t like special effects, because I do like all the different facets of filmmaking.

Thanks to Joanne for sending in this Katie mention from a RDJ interview that ran in this past Sunday's Mirror Celeb
Magazine (UK)
:

Q. Er, right. What was it like working with Katie Holmes again ?

RDJ: She was something else when we did Wonder Boys together. On The
Singing Detective, she'd take every opportunity to lighten things up for me. She
would clown about a little bit, make fun of me and mimic my character. I don't
know if anyone else thought it was funny, but we did.

Q. Has she changed much ?

RDJ: News break: Katie Holmes is officially not a new actress any more.
She's developed some mastery that blows my mind. For the director, it was like
this, 'OK, that was good, Katie, let's do it one more time'. And she would,
and then he'd say. 'Now let's spend the rest of the day dealing with the
maggot-child Robert, spinning his wheels until we run out of light'.

Q. Did you draw on personal experience for the role ?

RDJ: Sure, although I've never had a nurse looked like Katie...Of course I
did - anybody can draw on his or her own experience to work with a role like
this. This is about real, everyday miracles when you allow them to occur. And
luckily we have enough film noir, make-out scenes and premature ejaculations
to warrant it being visited by an audience.
