From: Thank You For Smoking Director’s Blog Jason Reitman (TYFS Director) on Katie and the conspiracy theories around her vanished sex scene… In My Defense I've been following the comments on this blog as well as our IMDB board and noticed that some people have gotten it in their head that somehow I orchestrated this controversy from the start. If you don’t mind, I’d like to offer the following thoughts in my defense: 1. I'm not that clever. You have to keep in mind that when I came to explain the projection error after the screening, I thought it was hilarious. Of course, the one moment to be missing was a scene featuring Katie in the act. I made reference to it in jest. It wasn't 'til 48 hours later that the press suddenly decided to make a story out of this. 2. Anyone looking for some action will be very disappointed by the twelve seconds at the end of reel two. There is no nudity. It's not even remotely sexual. It's a comedic moment with some humping in the background that is undercut by humorous voice over. If I really made this all up, I’d only be setting people up for disappointment. 3. I don't have access to the print. I know this sounds ridiculous, but in the modern era of piracy, the studio keeps enormous security around the print. An armed guard from Fox arrives with the print one hour before the screening and sits in the projection booth throughout the show. Then promptly returns it to Fox. It would take Oceans 11 to hijack the reel. Most importantly, I really like Katie. She’s just a sweetheart and was nothing but professional and lovely on set. I couldn’t be happier with her performance and I’m thrilled to have her in the film. It kills me every time she gets crucified in the press and I’d never want to add to that muck. My problem is that what we’re dealing with is a mundane projection issue due to a cut to black that occurs between the reel change marks. It’s the truth and it sounds like a lie. Anyhow, if you feel like promoting further rumors, knock yourself out. I suppose it only provides more publicity for the film and more importantly, I find it incredibly entertaining…. In fact, please submit the most outlandish version of events you can come up with to this blog in the comments section. Astound me with your conspiracy theories. I’ve certainly heard some interesting ones over the last few days. Would love to hear what you can come up with. From: Jam.Canoe Sundance festival hits & misses PARK CITY, Utah -- Everything I needed to know about Sundance I learned from DMX. But I did learn this after sitting through the rapper's Never Die Alone a few years ago: Just because it's at Sundance doesn't mean it's good. Or decent. In fact, a film can be atrocious and still wind up on a screen. With Sundance '06 at the halfway mark, it seems time to separate the gems that have emerged, from the clunkers. The Hits …* Little Miss Sunshine, which I've written about, is sidesplitting goodness. * So, it's said, is Thank You For Smoking. Also worthwhile? The brutal western The Proposition, written by Nick Cave and starring Guy Pearce, and The Night Listener, a creepy suspense film with Robin Williams and Toni Collette who, with roles in both this and Sunshine, looks to be the belle of this ball. TYFS Reviews! From: Aint It Cool News “Thank You for Smoking" - Aaron Eckhart, Maria Bello, William H Macy, Katie Holmes, Adam Brody, Rob Lowe, Robert Duval Definitely my favorite of the films I saw. Nick Naylor (Eckhart) is a motormouth tobacco lobbyist with loose morals. Throughout the film he butts heads with a liberal senator from Vermont (Macy), travels to Hollywood to enlist the filmaking industy in his efforts to sell cigarettes and is constantly being forced to justify his actions (helping to sell products that kill people) to those in his personal life. He crosses paths with a journalist willing to do anything to get a story (Holmes), the "father" of big tobacco (Duval) and a hilariously narcissistic Hollywood agent (Lowe) with an Asian fetish. The script is very well written, the film has great pacing and Eckhart is perfectly cast. The film doesn't take a stance on smoking (its more a statement on freedom of choice) and therefore I'm curious as to how it will be treated in the press. I highly recommend this one and its the only film I saw that I will see again in the theaters. 4.5 out of 5. Note: There was a mixup at the screening and about 10-15 seconds of a Katie Holmes sex scene was left out of the film but we were assured it will be in the final cut that makes it to the theaters. ===================================== From: Aint It Cool News Thank You For Smoking- I expected more of a political statement from a movie all about the tobacco industry, but instead, got an enjoyable comedy about a sleazy lobbiest for the tobacco industry who doesn't really care who he sells cigarettes to (teenagers, elementary school kids, etc) as long as they sell. This is a fun movie (even without the infamous Katie Holmes sex scene), and one that I'm sure will do well when it goes wide. From: Flavorpill.net My Top Ten Cents from Sundance 9.
