From: Zap2it.com 'Smoking' Mystery: Holmes Sex Scene Vanishes LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com)- Conspiracy theorists temporarily ran amuck at the Sundance Film Festival, as the comedy "Thank You for Smoking" screened without a sex scene featuring Katie Holmes. The 12-second tryst between the pre-pregnancy Holmes, playing a journalist, and Aaron Eckhart, as a tobacco lobbyist, was part of the version of the film that played last fall at the Toronto Film Festival, but the Saturday (Jan. 21) and Sunday Sundance screenings were missing the footage. "We were sitting there in shock," the film's writer/director Jason Reitman told the Los Angeles Times. "And I turned to other people who had worked on the film, and we were completely confused. But the audience didn't seem to notice or care." This yielded a different kind of buzz for "Smoking," which set off a bidding war (ultimately won by Fox Searchlight) in Toronto. Had Tom Cruise worked his special magic to get the scene -- described as not nearly as graphic as Holmes oft screencapped appearance in "The Gift" -- lifted? Had a horny projectionist made his own editing decisions? Apparently not. The Times claims that the scene was accidentally removed when reels were spliced together in Los Angeles before the Festival.
