Batman Begins Nominated for Cinematographer Award

Batman Begins (Wally Pfister), "Brokeback Mountain" (Rodrigo Prieto), "Good Night, And Good Luck" (Robert Elswit), "King Kong" (Andrew Lesnie) and "Memoirs of a Geisha" (Dion Beebe) are nominees in the feature film competition of the 20th Annual American Society of Cinematographers Outstanding Achievements Awards. The winner will be named during the ASC Awards gala on February 26 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

"The five finalists were nominated by their peers who believe that their artful and seamless cinematography contributed to the success of these compelling movies," says Russ Alsobrook, ASC who chairs the organization's Awards Committee.

The finalists were nominated for studio and independent films in genres ranging from action adventure to drama. The nominees are natives of the United States, Australia and Mexico.

This is the third ASC Award nomination for Lesnie, who was previously recognized for "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" in 2002 and "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2004. Prieto was nominated for "Frida" in 2003. Beebe was nominated for "Collateral" last year. It's the first ASC nominations for Pfister and Elswit.

ASC was founded in 1919. There are currently 285 members, and 145 associate members working in ancillary sectors of the industry.

Jonathan Rhys-Meyers on Katie and Tom!

Q: OK, spill all about "Mission: Impossible III." Has Tom Cruise been acting weird?

JRM: All I can tell you is that it's a tasty movie. Tom is a cool, intense guy. I'm also an intense guy, so it's been working out great. ... As for stories, the first day of shooting, Tom and I were on this speedboat. That was the first time I met Tom. We're sitting there on the boat and Tom is driving for the take. The next thing I hear is him singing under his breath, 'Da-da-da-da-da-doodle-do.' He was so excited that he was humming the "Mission: Impossible" theme song. At first I thought they put the soundtrack on to give us more of a buzz. But then I realized it was Tom singing the theme. ... And yes, Katie [Holmes] has been around. She's a great girl. Sweet. Gentle. Smart. Very much in love with Tom.

What’s in a name?

Get ready for Dellen Cruise.

That’s what Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes told Ellen Degeneres that they’d name their unborn child if it’s a boy. If it’s a girl, the name will be Ellen. They were kidding, of course. We hope.

DeGeneres also offered to be the child’s godmother — and to babysit. “Send it over because, babysitting I think is like $12.00 an hour,” the talk show host tells Cruise on a segment of “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” that airs today.

“Is it really?” Cruise asks.

“And they will take advantage of you for like $15.00,” DeGeneres adds.

“Can we negotiate?” the mega star inquires.

“Oh,” replies Degeneres. “I’ll do it for less.”
