Tom: 'I Bought a Sonogram Machine' for Katie

He's played a fighter pilot, sports agent and samurai onscreen - but is Tom Cruise now preparing to imitate an obstetrician in real life?

In an interview taped Oct. 30 with Barbara Walters for her upcoming special Barbara Walters Presents: The 10 Most Fascinating People
of 2005, which airs Nov. 29 on ABC, Cruise revealed his latest purchase for his expectant fiancée Katie Holmes.

"I bought a sonogram machine," Cruise told Walters. "I am gonna donate it to a hospital when we are done."

Added Walters: "Wait, you are going to do your own sonogram?"

"Yes," said Cruise, laughing.

The devices, which use ultrasound waves to allow a peek at a fetus's development, can cost anywhere from $15,000 to over $200,000.
(Cruise's rep declined to comment on the purchase.)

So does Tom know if their camera-ready kid is a boy or a girl? "No, I don't," he said. "Barbara, I would tell you. I would say, 'I know if it's
a boy or a girl and I'm not telling you.'"

Walters asked, "So what do you see?" Said Cruise: "A little baby."

It's wait and see for wedding plans too, according to Cruise. "We are gonna get married next summer or early fall," he told Walters. "We
don't have a date set yet."

Walters volunteered to catch the bouquet. But before Babs can dive for the flowers, Cruise has work to do. He and Holmes recently left
for Shanghai, where he'll spend a couple of weeks on location to film scenes for Mission: Impossible 3, due out next May.

FASCINATION SCENE

By LIZ SMITH

'I WILL forever be jumping on couches!" That's Tom Cruise talking to Barbara Walters on Barbara's "The 10 Most
Fascinating People of 2005" special, airing next Tuesday.

Tom, like Piaf, has no regrets - not for his public exuberance over Katie Holmes. ("All men should jump
on couches . . . all men should celebrate their women.") And not for his challenging "chat" with Matt Lauer over
antidepressants.

Tom also addresses the "Scientology birth" rumors - that Katie won't have pain drugs and will be utterly silent while
delivering. Tom says: "Like anything, you want to be as quiet as possible. There have been
misinterpretations that the woman can't make any noise, and that's just not true. It's nutty. No, but just
calm and quiet. I want Katie to be as comfortable as possible. And whatever she's gonna go through, she's
gonna go through. And I'm gonna be there." (This doesn't exactly address the issue of a woman in childbirth
suffering intractable pain and needing painkillers.)

Tom Cruise arrives in Shanghai secretly

Tom Cruise was officially scheduled to arrive in Shanghai on November 29th, but he (and Katie) brought forward his
arrival to the Sunday.

To avoid media interviews, Cruise has been keeping to his hotel. He says he's not taking any interview
requests.

One insider has been reported as saying that "Mission Impossible 3" will begin shooting on Thursday.

Though Cruise has kept his schedule a secret, his twenty person retinue, five official cars and one personal car
have guaranteed him a lot of attention.

Tom doesn't plan to visit other places in China, except for Xi Tang in Zhejing province, where the crew will do
some location shooting.

Cruise is quite likely to attend the MTV super ceremony to be held in Shanghai on Friday night.

KATIE, TOM & ISABELLA

Katie Holmes is expecting her first child with fiancée Tom Cruise, but the actress has already revealed
her soccer-mom side: She's a regular at the games of his daughter Isabella, 12 (Cruise and Nicole
Kidman are also parents to Connor, 10). "She almost seems born for motherhood," says her pal and
former Dawson's Creek costar Oliver Hudson.

Celebrity Name Game

Remember Bennifer? Former lovebirds Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez started the trend of star
twosomes with clever nicknames - but in 2005, the number of mono-monikered couples skyrocketed.

This year introduced new pairings (Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt - "Brangelina," Jennifer
Aniston and Vince Vaughn - "Vaughniston," Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise - "TomKat");
new parents (Britney Spears and Kevin Federline - "Spederline"); newlyweds (Demi Moore
and Ashton Kutcher - "Ashmi") and even a whole new Bennifer (Jennifer Garner and Ben
Affleck - a.k.a. "Garfleck").
