Since their very public two-month courtship this summer, Katie Holmes, 26, and Tom Cruise, 43 (in
Hollywood in June), have been uncharacteristically low-profile. Although Cruise's rep says, "They're
planning their own wedding," the couple seem to have slowed down. "Nothing is imminent, (wedding-
wise)," a source close to the pair tells PEOPLE. "They are letting things evolve. They're happy things
have quieted down a bit."

EXPECT TO HEAR WEDDING BELLS

'I THINK Tom Cruise better marry that girl . . . or else people might think he wasn't sincere." This was
said to me — and very sincerely — just the other day, by somebody who believes that actions speak
louder than press reps or couch-leaping. (This person is also apt to ask, "Who are Nick and Jessica and
what do they actually do?")
Well, at least part of Tom's "sincerity" has been accounted for with the news that young Miss
Holmes is expecting the actor's child. Marriage can't be far behind. Tom is so not the baby-
born-out-of-wedlock type.
AND WHILE we think deep Tom thoughts, the star will be honored on Nov. 10, at the 14th
annual BAFTA/LA Awards at the Beverly Hilton. (BAFTA is the British Oscar!) Tom receives the
Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award. (Both Cruise and his then-wife Nicole Kidman starred in the director's
last film, "Eyes Wide Shut.") Directors Mike Newell and Ronald Neame are also to being recognized. And,
Elizabeth Taylor, too. (Taylor has not been seen in public since February, and just canceled an AIDS
benefit due to a cold. The potential of her actually appearing is tenuous, but BAFTA lives in hope.)

Up(date) a creek
TV hasn't been the same without them: With witty banter and juicy relationship drama, the "Dawson's
Creek"-ers kept us glued to the set. But where are they now? Sure, preggers Michelle Williams is engaged to
Heath Ledger and Katie Holmes is, well, around. But James Van Der Beek? He seems to be without a paddle.

A Baby For Tom And Katie
Let the couch-jumping begin: Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes are expecting a baby.
Holmes' pregnancy was reported Wednesday by People magazine. The couple have been dating since April and
became engaged in June.
"Tom and Katie are very excited, and the entire family is very excited," Lee Anne DeVette, Cruise's spokeswoman, told
People.
Did that include his ex-wife, Nicole Kidman and their kids, Isabella, 12, and Conner, 10?
"I asked his sister and publicist (DeVette) how each individual was taking it," CBS News Early Show entertainment
contributor and People magazine senior editor Jess Cagle said. "She didn't want to single anybody out. She said the
entire family is very excited about it."
Devette added that Holmes, 26, "has never felt better." It would be her first child.
Cruise, 43, is now shooting "Mission" Impossible 3." In a June interview promoting his summer blockbuster "War of the
Worlds," Cagle asked the actor if he wanted more children.
Cruise replied: "I love children. I've always wanted to be a father, always. As far back as I could remember, I couldn't wait
to have kids. I always loved kids, so it's something Kate and I will talk about …That's always a thing; we'll see. Anything
is possible."
After Cruise and Holmes went public with their relationship in April, smooching and posing for photographers in Rome,
many doubted the romance — the words "publicity stunt" have rained down on the couple like an alien invasion.
Skeptics may still decry the romance, but it became more difficult to doubt the relationship after a ring became involved.
"Obviously this is — has been very, very fast. It was a surprise to a lot of people, but I think that people who were that
cynical about the relationship sort of have egg on their face now," Cagle said.
