Mirror games in Capeside

The moment I asked my professor in psychology of social communications if I could write my
thesis about Dawson’s Creek he answered me: “I’m still at Dallas, but show me it’s worthed
and I’ll sign the approval”. Two years have passed since the end of the heir of Beverly Hills, 90210 in
the USA, but to understand how much it was worthed just take a look at the summer reruns
ratings! What’s left of the Capeside kids after 128 episodes and 6 seasons? Just surf through
the Internet boards of all the world and see how the fans have renamed the show “Pacey and
Joey’s Creek”.
And not just because in the finale, Joey [Katie Holmes], that in the pilot episode used to get in
Dawson’s [James Van Der beek] room using a ladder, has now chose his best friend Pacey
[Joshua Jackson] as her life partner. The Pjer fans love very much the two actors, who
interlaced their private lives so much making the line between fiction romance and real life one,
thinner and thinner. Let’s rewind the show film, back in the past, from the first ciak, some years
ago…
“You’re an angel”: those are the only sweet words Joey tells Pacey during the first season. And
she says that just because he stole his father’s car to take her visit her father in prison, who’s in
for dealing drug. Their relationship continues in a ping pong of acid remarks till the third season:
she’s been refused by Dawson e he’s been abandoned by Andie [Meredith Monroe]. “You know
it’s a new year. Who knows? You and I may even become friends”: says Pacey. “I’m upset
enough as it is”: she strikes him with her Potter’s assassine look.
They study algebra together, go to tango lessons, she calls him in the middle of the night after a
bad date to be taken back home, he shows her the plate of the boat he’s restoring, the True
Love and gives her the permission to get aboard. Pacey saves her family from bankruptcy,
helping them to open a Bed & Breakfast, he teaches her how to drive, he rents her a wall for a
100 dollars so that she can paint. “If I should ever thank you for something, it would be for being yourself,
because in your heart you know what’s right and what’s wrong and because you’ve
been close to me when I needed you” with this sentence Joey pictures her new feeling, she
helps him memorize the lines for the school play and gives him back the selfconfidence he never
had at home, where he was always seen as a black sheep. “Witters never quit”: a good motto for
someone who’s unable to confess his best friend he’s falling in love with her! A kiss at dawn, on
the shore, is way better [even if it’s followed by kicks and punches from her…]. But then Joey
gives up: “I feel you Pacey, you make me feel alive” and despite Dawson’s whinings the two
leave for the summer on the True Love.
“You’re my goodmood pill: I think about you when I’m confused, mad or sad and I immediately
feel better”: that’s Joey’s recipe to overtake the hurdles of a newborn couple. And their first time,
she describes it like this: “When you were over me and moved my hair from my forehead… it
was nice… I felt safe”.
But then their pats separate: she leaves for college, he sails towards the ocean. They reunite in
the only episode of Dawson’s Creek who’s entirly dedicatead to only two characters, in the sixt
season, when they get stucked inside a mall for a night. After one of her tipical runaways from
her feelings, in the series finale, placed in 2008, Joey makes her choice: “I love you Pacey, and
it’s real”.
“If I’m happy about Joey’s decision? Of course I am, I got the girl!”: that’s Joshua Jackson’s
answer during the press conference announcing the beginning of the shooting of The Shadow Dancer.
Co-produced for Italy by Movieweb and filmed in Tuscany, the movie will be presented
in Rome in October. After receiving the 2004 Telefilm Festival Award for Dawson’s Creek as
best drama series, the canadian actor repeated, in front of the cameras, the cult-line for Italian
Pjers: “I remember everything”. The one he said to Joey during the third season [anti]prom after
he had touched the bracelet the mother gave her before dying. But he also added: “I’m actually a
liar, cause in real life I don’t remember anything!”.
For his 26th birthday, celebrated with a whipped cream pie on the set of The Shadow Dancer in
Val d’Orcia, the creekers [the fan of Dawson’s Creek], gave him the card of “1st Italian Pjer Day”,
celebrated in Viareggio on April 26 2004. A card he kept in his dressing room saying: “You’re
better than me, cause you know everything about the show”
To a girl, who asked him to sign a picture of Pacey and Joey, he said in Italian: “It’s beautiful”.
So it’s easy to understand the feeling they have, not only during work. During the shooting of the
first season, in the episode when they end up in the river, looking for winkles, Josh and Katie fell
in love. She defined him “my first real boyfriend”, he called her “my first love” and they were
inseparable for eight months.
Fans can find some pictures of the two of them when they were together in the J. Crew 1998 fall
catalogue. Just need to click on ebay.com and be ready to spend 50€.
During the kisses on the set, Josh, according to what Katie said, used to have fun biting her lips
and the alchemy of their love story became a script, taking to story to a turning point after the
creator, Kevin Williamson, left the show. Then the breakup, but without a real breakaway. After
the ending of Dawson’s Creek they were the only ones that remained friends, even on the other
side of the ocean, where they both had to move. Katie was in London filming Batman Begins
and Josh was probing the ground for his theatrical debut, after trying, without success, to
become the new Batman himself.
So on May 14 2004, they celebrated together the one year anniversary of the ending of the
show in the US. Last winter, she also flew all the way to London to acclaim him at the Apollo
Theatre, where he was acting in “A life in theatre”, alongside Patrick Stewart [Captain Jean-Luc
Picard in Star Trek: The next generation and Professor X in X-Men]. In Italy, Josh said: “What I
remember about Dawson’s Creek pretty much regards the people I’ve met”. And Katie’s face,
during the Batman Begins press conference in Rome, enlightens when she learns that the next
day, her ex-boyfriend movie, The Shadow Dancer, will be presented at the Taormina BNL Film
Festival. Most of the pictures she signs in Rome are taken from Dawson’s Creek episodes and
she’s pretty happy to take a look in the past, when she was just an Ohio girl, transformed in a tv
star after an audition tape filmed by her mom in the basement. “Thanks to everybody. I’m
touched by all this love”, she says smiling, while she keep tormenting her hands, probabily
because of the stress caused by her intense professional and sentimental life. None of them had
never been in Italy during Dawson’s Creek and suddenly, in the last months, both found
theirselves running up and down the peninsula for work [Josh] or for love business, since Katie
seems to very often accompany her new boyfriend, Tom Cruise, in Italy. For the record, Josh
didn’t want to comment the most popular love story of the world, refusing to answer any question
regarding her ex-girlfriend. What is gonna be the next episode of their incredible story?

Katherine Noelle Holmes was born on 18th December of 1978 in Toledo (Ohio, USA). She
began her career in “The Ice Storm”, after this film Kevin Williamson choosed her for “I Know
What You Did Last Summer”, that he wrote. She called him and invited him to write the season
finale of the WB’s teen drama. We’ll se her in “Pieces of April” and in “The First’s daughter”,
where she’ll be the USA President’s daughter. She filmed “Thank you for smooking” with Adam
Brody (Seth Cohen in “The OC”) and she’ll film “Shame on you” with Dannis Quaid. The best
