New timetable boosts Globe influence on Oscars
Based on conversations with awards marketers and insiders who focus seriously on key races like
the Globes and Oscars, here are some thoughts about just how competitive it's likely to be on the
awards front this year.
In terms of films with awards potential that have already surfaced, a few that come to mind (in no
particular order) include:
"Batman Begins" (Warner Bros.), directed by Christopher Nolan (an Oscar and Globe nominee for his
original screenplay for "Memento") and starring Christian Bale as Bruce Wayne and Batman, Michael
Caine (an Oscar winner for "The Cider House Rules" and "Hannah and Her Sisters" and a Globe winner for
"Little Voice," "Educating Rita" and the TV movie "Jack the Ripper"), Liam Neeson (an Oscar and Globe
nominee for "Schindler's List" and a Globe nominee for "Kinsey" and "Michael Collins") and Katie Holmes.
With Nolan having breathed new life into the previously sagging "Batman" franchise and, on top of that,
having attracted good reviews for doing so, Academy members could give this consideration that
doesn't typically go to blockbuster movies.

poll in '99, '02 and '03 and consistently remains the hottest guy around, according to InStyle readers. Brad's
'Smith' co-star on-and-off screen, ANGELINA JOLIE, landed Sexiest Leading Lady. Think Brad had something
to do with that?
Brad's 'Ocean's Twelve' partner in crime, GEORGE CLOONEY, was voted Sexiest Actor Over 40, while classy
SUSAN SARANDON nabbed the sexy prize for an Actress Over 40. As far as accented stars are concerned,
Aussie import NICOLE KIDMAN bewitched voters to land the Sexiest Female Import title. England's
ORLANDO BLOOM claimed the Sexiest Male Import spot, but just barely -- sexy Spaniard ANTONIO
BANDERAS gave the younger, sword-wielding hero a run for his money, just 23 votes behind.
Other stars on the "What's Sexy Now!" list include TOM CRUISE and KATIE HOLMES (Sexiest Couple),
BEYONCÉ (Sexiest Singer), CLAY AIKEN (Sexiest Crooner), TIGER WOODS and DAVID BECKHAM (who, by
a discrepancy of two votes, practically tied for Sexiest Athlete).
