A TOM & KATIE STORM

'THOUGHT I'D pass along this interesting rumor. Just wanted to let you
know what was going around out there!"
This came with Internet stuff from a normal woman in literary circles;
no sleazy source she. It was about Tom and Katie. And please, if you
need last names, why are you reading here? Anyway, the rumor is
fabulously unprintable, libelous and fascinating. Even if I could print it
without being sued, I can't confirm that it's true. Most likely a lot of
wishful thinking went into this slander.
But make no mistake — whether it's good or bad for Tom, or good or bad
for his new Steven Spielberg movie "War of the Worlds" — Mr. Cruise has
never, ever been in such a florescent glare of gossip and innuendo.
This big star can knit his brow, hurl thunderbolts and call upon the gods
of litigious Olympus, but nothing is going to stop this speeding gossip
train of inflamed yakety, yakety! (And Tom seems to be enjoying pouring
gasoline into the boiler.)
Once the movie earns back the $500 million it needs to just break even,
maybe everything will calm down.
I ASKED my friend Barbara Walters to give me some "backstage" stuff
from Tom and Katie's appearance on her show "The View" that is to be seen
on ABC TV this very morning. (It was filmed some days ago, even before
a combative Cruise appeared on "Today" with Matt Lauer. Tom himself
embargoed it to appear on this date.)
Barbara says, "Tom Cruise is a very nice, decent kind of guy." She
doesn't believe a word about him manipulating his love affairs and so
forth. She said, "He and Katie came together, but she didn't intend, or seem
to want to be on camera. She was wearing no makeup. But he wanted her
to join him out there, and she came. He seemed very happy and relaxed."
OK, I'm tuning in. I wouldn't miss it for the world.
