The worst thing that can happen to a coming up actress is this: you have to promote a movie (the most important of her young career) just a few days later having announced to the world that she is Tom Cruise’s new girlfriend. Infact this turn of events creates immediately an incovenient: tons of interviewers will have scarce curiosity about the movie (Batman Begins), but a famelic desire of news about the new golden couple.
It inspires tenderness Katie Holmes (26 years), hometown girl who looks like someone who arrived to Hollywood just because has taken a wrong bus stop. And since in our case the disgraces never come alone, it’s in Rome, Italy that the love with Tom was announced to the world. And it’s italian the first reporter that she happens to meet while she prepares to answer the questions about the kolossal in wich she acts alongside Christian Bale. Before to begin the interview, a couple of very worried PR women recommend me strongly: “Personal questions are forbidden” No Tom Cruise please. The 2 women repeat and repeat the concept as if they should protect an old, fragile aunt, to whom you have to hid the death of the family’s cat. I request an ecception. Geographical question? Like: miss Holmes, did you have fun in Rome? Katie hesitates, than she lets go herself.
“I was fascinated, it doesn’t happen often to find yourself in a place so full of history, especially for an hometown girl like me. In Ohio I’m not used to this view. It has been an experience that naturally I will not be able to forget, for many reasons. I believe that Piazza di Spagna is a place unique in the world. In general I found Italy like people told me. The life style, the habits and people are really different from America”
The place in Ohio in wich Katie was raised is called Toledo. She grew there, daughter of a lawyer and an homekeeper, watching “La casa nella prateria” (Note: I don’t know the american title, it’s the story of Laura Ingalls) and playing in the free time with the boys of her hometown, gaining the reputation of a tomboy. Since she attended an all girl, catholic school, some excess was justified.
She even tried dancing (with modest results, she admits) and her life seemed destined to a future as accountant.
Of course there was a turning point. A trip to Los Angeles with her mom to try a screen test for a soap opera. She liked to act in high school, why don’t try? The soap opera didn’t work out, but Ang Lee noticed her and wanted her in The Ice Storm. So begun the new life of the hometown girl. A not small jump, from the strict catholic school to the sinful Hollywood.
“I’m happy about my education, even if maybe school with males would have been more fun. But maybe now I wouldn’t have my sense of discipline. As for the temptations (of Hollywood), I have the best parents in the world and they are the ones who gave me a sense of humility. I say it honestly: I had success with Dawson’s Creek, but who knows me, knows that I’m the same person I was back in time in Toledo. Infact, I come back there as much as I can.
Q. A difficult quest, now that your career has became kolossal…
A. Working in Batman opened to me new and unbelievable horizons. In the past i did beautiful movies like Wonder Boys, but this is a whole other dimension. My first day on the set i was with my mouth wide open (for the shock) . I was amazed.
Q. When we said kolossal, we referred to the new level of popularity, due to you know what…
A. I don’t read (what they write about me), I don’t watch tv. So the gossips about me don’t matter. My private life is one thing, my job is another. My parents teached me this. And now, if you want, let’s talk about batman…
Q.Let’s talk about it: why in your opinion so much movies about comic books heroes?
A.Probably because we live in very difficult times, where people need an escape from everyday problems. Batman gives hope and gives you entartainment without controindications. It’s “cinema” in his most truthful essence.
Q. You are part of the most 50 beautiful people on the planet, according to an american pubblication. What do you do, when something like this happens? You give a party? You check the graduatory every month?
A. Personally, I celebrate eating something like an hot dog. I mean: this is my attitude toward my appearance and my body. Of course I care about it, but I find that “beauty” is a very dangerous concept, especially in this enviroment, where you never know if you are considered for your appearance or your qualities. In people, i’m attracted more by their inner beauty, a mix among kindness, generousity and honesty. I’d like to be considered beautiful for these three qualities.
Q.But even the eye…
A.Of course, but in second place.
Q. If you could steal from batman a superpower, in this time of your life what would you choose?
A. To be in three places at the same time, but I don’t believe that even Batman can do it: among the superheroes he is the only one without superpowers.
Q. And what would be these three places?
My home, in Ohio. A movie set. And near the people I love.
