Some TomKat stuff...

From today's Liz Smith:

...Rolling Stone also offers its take on Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, a pairing that I find myself hearing discussed at some high-toned ladies luncheons. (Like the breakup of Brad and Jen, the coupling of Tom and Katie is something about which everybody has an opinion, even if they don't go to the movies.) RS's Rob Sheffield writes: "This next mission is your toughest yet. Your goal: Convince the world that you and Katie Holmes are caught in a scorching love train, rather than a sad publicity ploy . . . you need her to look like a heavy-lidded, dazed, satisfied w-o-m-a-n, rather than a scared kid who's been told to play along, or she'll never see her stuffed koalas again."...

Sure, they're in love -- with publicity
By Renée Graham, Globe Staff | May 24, 2005

What is it about Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes that seems so icky?

Ever since the mega-star and the young actress made their debut as a couple last month at an awards show in Rome, there's been no shortage of snarky remarks and cracks about a relationship that doesn't seem real. Not in a too-good-to-be-true kind of way, but more in a oh-please-give-us-a-break fashion.

It's certainly not because they don't look good together. More than 20 years since his breakthrough role in ''Risky Business," Cruise remains boyishly handsome with his trademark killer smile. And Holmes, probably best known from the teen angst-fest ''Dawson's Creek," is quite lovely in an unassuming way. It's not even the age difference. At 42, Cruise is 16 years older than Holmes, but really, who even cares about such things anymore?

''I want to share my life with this woman," Cruise tells MTV's Sway -- in a segment from a special scheduled to air June 11 -- of Holmes, whom he calls ''exceptional," ''special," and ''extraordinary." Of course, what's most exceptional and extraordinary are Cruise's efforts to publicize his relationship with her.

Cruise's 'Oprah' couch trip: Is it love or hype?

By César G. Soriano, USA TODAY

Tom Cruise has officially gone gaga, according to his pal Oprah Winfrey.

"The boy is GONE," Winfrey joked on her talk show Monday, shortly after Cruise, 42, jumped up and down on her couch like a giddy schoolboy. "What has happened to you?" she asked.

"I'm in love! I'm in love," Cruise yelled, throwing his hands in the air. "I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back. It's something that has happened, and I feel I want to celebrate it. I want to celebrate her. She's a very special woman."

From the AP:

Cruise Professes Love for Holmes on Oprah
Mon May 23, 5:59 PM ET

First Tom Cruise was head over heels about his new girlfriend, Katie Holmes. Then he was giddy. Now, he's just plain batty.

"I can't be cool. I can't be laid-back," an exuberant Cruise said Monday during a taped appearance on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." "Something happened and I want to celebrate it."

A starry-eyed Cruise got down on his knees and repeatedly jumped up on the couch like a Robin Williams comedy act, saying that his love for Holmes was "beyond cool."

Will he propose? His answer did more than leave the door open.

"I'm going to discuss it with her," the twice-divorced actor said. "Honestly, I haven't (had this kind of experience before)."

Later in the show, Cruise went backstage to bring out Holmes, who was quoted in Seventeen magazine last fall as saying she grew up wanting to marry the "Risky Business" star.

"I'm glad I was a big dreamer," she told Winfrey.

The 42-year-old actor and Holmes, 26, were first photographed together in Rome last month. Their relationship, which was earlier announced by their publicists, has caught the celebrity gossip world by storm.

Cruise, who will star in Steven Spielberg's "War of the Worlds" next month, filled in some details about how they met.

"I admire her and I thought I wanted to meet her — so I called her," he said. He also mentioned memorable events in their romance, including a motorcycle ride on the beach and surprising Holmes in Rome by covering her hotel room in rose petals.

"I'm a romantic. I love that stuff," he said.

Despite their openness, many have expressed doubts about the couple's real intentions. People and Us Weekly magazines have both published polls showing that over 60 percent of respondents believe the relationship is a publicity stunt.

Holmes, who starred on television's "Dawson's Creek," has an upcoming blockbuster of her own, "Batman Begins."

Cruise was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, and dated Penelope Cruz for several years.

Holmes and actor Chris Klein recently called off their engagement, after dating for five years.

USA Today Film Critic Comments on Batman Begins Screening

Long Island, NY: Hello Scott - what is your final prediction of how much the third Star Wars film will make? Will it surpass the 1977 original? Besides Star Wars, which film will come in second for this summer? Thanks.

Scott Bowles: Right now I'd say second place will be a battle between 'War of the Worlds' and 'King Kong.' I saw 'Batman' last week, and that movie certainly delivers. But I think it's too dark and geared toward comic devotees to challenge for No. 2.
