Source: The Hollywood Reporter Dec. 02, 2004 Quaid wearing three hats in Cooley biopic By Liza Foreman Dennis Quaid is set to star in, write and direct a biopic about the controversial 1940s Western swing star Spade Cooley titled "Shame on You." Katie Holmes is in talks to play Cooley's wife, whom he killed in front of their teenage daughter in 1961. Cooley spent the '60s in prison for his crime and was released in 1969 to perform a benefit concert, where he died from a heart attack backstage. Holly Wiersma, one of the producers of the upcoming "Happy Endings," is set to produce the feature and is finalizing financing. Named after Cooley's most famous composition, "Shame, Shame on You," which also became his theme song, the project would mark Quaid's feature film directing debut. He directed the television pic "Everything That Rises" in 1998. Born in 1910, Cooley formed his first band in the early '40s. In 1943, his band recorded "Shame, Shame on You" before splitting in 1946. Quaid's recent credits include "The Day After Tomorrow," "In Good Company," "Flight of the Phoenix" and "Far From Heaven." Holmes' recent credits include "First Daughter," "Pieces of April" and "The Singing Detective." She also will appear in the upcoming "Batman Begins." Quaid is repped by WMA. Holmes is repped by CAA and manager John Carrabino. |
