New Katie Video Interview and Article
Posted September 23, 2004

Thanks to pjrockmycreek on the message board for pointing out there's a Katie Video Interview at Film Force:

Video Feature: Interview with Katie Holmes
From the set of First Daughter.

September 21, 2004 - With all the media attention that Katie Holmes draws, I'm led to wonder how she can maintain being an average, everyday girl. She's constantly in the public eye, and it's probably fair to say she gets invited to a lot of parties. And therein lies the real life similarity to the character she plays in her new movie, Samantha Mackenzie, daughter of the President of the United States. If only those incessant photographers would stop hounding her.

In this video interview from the set of First Daughter, Holmes talks about her character, her co-stars, the huge White House set that was built for the movie, and, of course, the problems associated with constantly being the center of attention.

Thanks again to pjrockmycreek for this new new Katie article from Zap2It where she talks about marriage, responsibilities and her films.

Holmes Relates to Living Life in a Bubble

Having spent six years of her life as Joey Potter on TV's "Dawson's Creek," Katie Holmes has lived what would have been her college years in the public eye. Much like the Bush twins or Chelsea Clinton, Holmes has been a role model to millions of people since her late teens.

"When you are in the public eye people look up to you. Especially when you're on a show that's geared toward young people, you do want to be a nice role model. As much as you think 'God, how am I a role model?' Well you are, so act like one."

The 25-year-old actress tells Zap2it.com that she has had a First Family interaction while hosting the TV special "Christmas at the White House." The real first daughters, Jena and Barbara were taking exams at the time, but Holmes did in fact meet the parents, George W. and Laura Bush.

"They were very nice," she recalls. "It was amazing too - regardless of feelings about where the candidates stand, there's such an amazing energy when you meet the President of the United States. It's just like 'Oh God.'"

When reminiscing about the meeting Holmes becomes almost lost for words. "You know you meet celebrities and you meet movie stars and it's just 'Wow I've seen you in a movie but whoa you're the - hello.' It kind of takes your breath away."

In her latest film "First Daughter" Holmes plays Samantha McKenzie, daughter to the president. Samantha is about to embark on her new life as a college freshman in California. This is a tough and exciting time for any teenager but for the daughter of the president, it's even harder. She hears "Hail to the Chief" practically wherever she goes and has secret servicemen guarding her dorm room, accompanying her to class, and even showing up at frat parties. Samantha struggles with the pressure that comes along with living away from home for the first time, she argues with her roomie, falls in love with her resident assistant played by Marc Blucas ("The Alamo") and deals with her responsibilities as the First Daughter.

Missing out on her own college experience to do "Dawson's Creek" is something the young star acknowledges. "I shot the pilot for Dawson's Creek and was accepted to Columbia a week later."

Holmes still wonders what it would have been like to be a real college student instead of just playing the part of one. "From what my friends tell me, who did go to big schools, 'Oh you didn't miss anything.' I guess I'll never know," she says.

Nevertheless, the actress has good memories of her college-age days on "Dawson's Creek."

"I had my own experience and we definitely grew up together and did a lot of things--we weren't limited in our ability to be 18, 19, 20. We were just very in one sense very adult-like young kids," she says.

In the age of young Hollywood where role model Britney Spears is on her second marriage this year, Holmes realizes the importance of privacy and exposure particularly with her pending nuptials to long time boyfriend Chris Klein ("American Pie.")

"I feel like, personally, I can control how much I want to put out there," she says. "When I feel like I've had too much press or I'm in a fishbowl or something I just kind of go home or go on vacation."

Looking down at her rock of an engagement ring and asked about marriage plans, she smiles and says, "Well, that's kind of between us. We're keeping quiet." This girl from Toledo is clearly happy about her life and the way that her career is progressing. She's soon going to star along side Christian Bale in "Batman Begins."

"I hope that as I get older and mature that I will be able to play more adult-like roles and hopefully it will happen naturally. And doing Batman I think will be helpful because it's a movie that brings a lot of exposure," she says.

However, while filming "First Daughter" Holmes didn't get a chance to talk with original Caped Crusader and onscreen president-dad, Michael Keaton.

"Unfortunately, I didn't even know I was going to be in a Batman movie when I worked with Michael. He had shared some of his stories from his experience but we had no idea that maybe I was going to do the next one," she says.

But aside from her stint riding around in the Batmobile, Holmes says she does have dreams of eventually attending a university.

"I look forward to maybe someday going back and have the experience of being an older student. Some people say that they wish they could at an older age because they would appreciate it more," she says.

Will she be like her First Daughter character and be cordoned off from the other students?

"Well, I hope so," she says with a laugh. "Because I've just worked too hard not to have that attention."

"First Daughter" directed by Forest Whitaker ("Waiting to Exhale") will be released nationally Sept. 24
